Life & Style: How A Seattle Girl Became the LES Sweetheart

Photos Taken By Sunny Facer

If Vashtie is Downtown’s Sweetheart, then I’m the LES Sweetheart.

Everyone knows the impact a New York City neighborhood has on a person, each area has it’s own personality, community, and identity. Because New York is all about enhancing your self-identity and surrounding yourself around people who you can relate to, selecting the right ‘hood is essential to everyday life — which is why I live in the Lower East Side (LES).

The LES has been my home for majority of my time in New York. After living Queens for a few months, I decided to trade in my uncle’s cozy apartment for the LES life, meaning: living in overpriced matchbox apartments with paper thin walls, walking next to garbage bags bordering the sidewalks, and seeing people perform the dreadful walk of shame every morning. But that’s what makes this neighborhood so beautiful. It’s real. It’s not glamorous. Everything feels very relatable. In other words, you’re more likely to see ‪ZoĆ« Kravitz walking down the street than Blair from Gossip Girl.

Another aspect I love about the LES is that the neighborhood and style of living can really teach a person a few things:
  • Humbleness: You begin to realize that having a dishwasher in your apartment means you’ve finally made it in this concrete jungle
  • How to Get Creative: Considering the fact that everyone in this neighborhood is most likely ballin’ on a budget, you learn how to mix and match your clothes, borrow from your roommate or significant other, shop on Craigslist, etc.
  • Live Life: It’s no secret that N.Y.ers work 24/7 but one of the perks of this neighborhood is having one-of-a-kind boutiques, street art, small galleries, a plethora of restaurants, and dozens of dive bars at your finger tips. Being surrounded by endless opportunities makes it almost impossible to not live life!
Mother LES has taught me many lessons about the NY struggle and I'm grateful to live, love, and learn form this hood; and that is why I’ll gladly take the self-proclaimed title as the LES Sweetheart.
