Bucket List #2: Learn how to DJ…CHECK!
Last Saturday, I made my DJ'ing debut in none other than the LES (I guess I can really call myself the LES Sweetheart now).
Do you know that saying "people come into your lives for a reason?" Well, I'm a true believe in this. From Seattle to New York, I always found myself surrounded by DJs and I've even flirted with the idea of attempting to spin on the 1's and 2's in college. A couple of years after college, I was ready to accomplish my long time goal of mixing music but I was hesitant — I thought my time had passed. Thanks to my coworker who encouraged me to go for it and with a little help and a few lessons from a very patient friend, I was ready to be made into a DJ.
Was learning how to DJ a quarter life crisis? Maybe. But I'm happy that I did! As you know, I love discovering new artists/songs and music has always been a passion of mine. My heart feels fuller now that I've incorporated music more into my life :). If you have the drive, the passion, and the resources, make it happen!! It's never too late! So, the moral of the story is to just go for it! Don't think twice, just do it!
I want to give a big thank you to my sensei for mentoring me, my boyfriend for listening to my set for 5 straight days and being the toughest critic ever, and my friends who came to show their love and support!! Hopefully there will be more gigs in the future!
And to answer everyone’s question. I have yet to select a DJ name! DJ Young Garcia is floating around and I’m not going to lie. I kind of like it.
